What is On-Page SEO?

On-page SEO, also known as on-site SEO, is the practice of optimizing individual web pages to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic in search engines. This is different from off-page SEO, which involves external factors like backlinks. On-page SEO focuses on the content and HTML source code of a web page.

On-page SEO is crucial for improving your website’s visibility in search engine results. This is because it involves optimizing individual web pages to rank higher and attract more organic traffic.

Key Elements of On-Page SEO

In this section, I will help you to understand the key elements of on-page SEO and how to implement them effectively.

1. Content Quality

Content is king. High-quality content is the cornerstone of on-page SEO. Search engines like Google prioritize content that is useful, informative, and engaging. Here are some tips for creating great content.

  • Relevance: Ensure your content matches the search intent of your audience. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner to find relevant keywords.
  • Depth: Provide detailed and comprehensive information. Answer all potential questions a reader might have about the topic.
  • Originality: Avoid duplicate content. Unique content is more valuable and ranks higher.
  • Engagement: Write in a conversational tone. Use stories, examples, and questions to keep readers engaged.

2. Keyword Optimization

Keywords are the words and phrases people type into search engines. Optimizing your content for the right keywords is crucial. Here’s how to do it.

  • Keyword Research: Identify primary and secondary keywords relevant to your topic. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs or SEMrush.
  • Keyword Placement: Place your primary keyword in strategic locations, namely the title tag, meta description, URL, headings (H1, H2, H3), and throughout the content (naturally, without keyword stuffing).
  • Keyword Density: Maintain a natural keyword density. Overusing keywords can lead to penalties. Don’t over-optimize (if I may say it the Yoast way).

3. Title Tag

The title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. For starters, it is the <title> </title> of your website’s HTML code. Don’t worry if you are not a coder, coding is out of the scope of this article. So, just relax and we proceed.

The title tag is one of the most important on-page SEO factors. It defines what appears in the title bar of the browser when someone is reading your article. But not just that. It’s that bold and prominent piece of text that appears in the search results just below your page summary. Here are some tips and best practices for writing a good title for better on-page SEO.

  • Include Keywords: Incorporate your primary keyword near the beginning of the title.
  • Keep It Under 60 Characters: Search engines typically display the first 50-60 characters. Just make sure your title will be fully visible.
  • Make It Compelling: Write a title that attracts clicks. Use numbers, questions, and power words. I will write about power words in detail in another article.

4. Meta Description

The meta description is a brief summary of a web page’s content. It’s that short eye-catching summary you see below the page title in search results. While it doesn’t directly impact rankings, it influences click-through rates (CTR). And in any case, one of your goals for writing your good articles is to increase the CTR. Therefore, write articles that will compel someone to click that link in search results. I will show you here how to optimize it your meta descriptions to increase the CTR for your articles.

  • Length: Keep it between 150-160 characters. Write a meta description just long enough to be fully visible in search results. Not too short, and not too long.
  • Incorporate Keywords: Use your primary keyword naturally. You may include alternative keywords too if possible.
  • Engaging: Write a compelling description that entices users to click. Remember, clicking that link in the search results is your ultimate goal. So, don’t just write. But rather, write a description that will tickle someone’s finger into clicking that link. Let them have that feeling of “yes, I think this is what I am looking for”.

5. URL Structure

URLs should be simple, readable, and include keywords. A good URL structure improves user experience and SEO. Let me share with you some tips for a good URL structure.

  • Short and Descriptive: Keep URLs short and descriptive. Avoid unnecessary words. Avoid stop words. I will discuss stop words in detail in a separate article.
  • Use Hyphens: Separate words with hyphens, not underscores.
  • Include Keywords: Place relevant keywords in the URL. Do I really need to emphasize any further? I don’t think. So let’s proceed.

6. Headings and Subheadings

Headings (H1, H2, H3) help structure your content. They make it easier for readers to scan and understand your page. They also signal the hierarchy of your content to search engines. Here’s how to use them effectively:

  • H1 Tag: Use one H1 tag per page. It should include your primary keyword and clearly state the page’s main topic.
  • H2 and H3 Tags: Use H2 and H3 tags for subheadings. They should include secondary keywords and help organize the content.

7. Internal Linking

Internal links connect one page of your website to another. They help users navigate your site and establish a hierarchy of information. They also distribute page authority and boost SEO. Here’s how to do it:

  • Relevant Links: Link to relevant pages within your site. This keeps users engaged and reduces bounce rates.
  • Anchor Text: Use descriptive anchor text. Avoid generic terms like “click here.”
  • Avoid Overloading: Don’t overload your content with too many links. Be strategic and selective.

8. Image Optimization

Images make your content more engaging, but they also need to be optimized for SEO. I will show you how.

  • File Names: Use descriptive, keyword-rich file names for your images. If you just took these pictures using your phone, of course, they will have those funny auto-generated names. Change these names to SEO-friendly ones.
  • Alt Text: Provide alt text for all images. This helps search engines understand the content of the image. Make it a point to have your keywords or phrases reflected in the Alt of your images.
  • File Size: Compress images to reduce load times. Faster pages rank better.
  • File Type: Use image file types that will give smaller size images while keeping the quality good. I recommend JPEG, JPG and WEBP images as opposed to PNG.

9. Mobile Friendliness

More people are using mobile devices to browse the web. Your site must be mobile-friendly. Google uses mobile-first indexing, which means it primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. Here’s how to ensure your site is mobile-friendly:

  • Responsive Design: Use responsive design to ensure your site adapts to all screen sizes.
  • Mobile Usability: Check your site’s mobile usability in Google Search Console.
  • Page Speed: Optimize your site for fast loading on mobile devices.

10. Page Speed

Page speed is a critical ranking factor. Faster pages provide a better user experience and rank higher. Here’s how to improve your page speed. We shall discuss each of these in detail in separate articles.

  • Minimize HTTP Requests: Reduce the number of elements on your page.
  • Optimize CSS and JavaScript: Minify and combine CSS and JavaScript files.
  • Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN): A CDN distributes your content across multiple servers to reduce load times.
  • Enable Browser Caching: Store static files on users’ browsers to reduce load times for repeat visitors.

11. User Experience (UX)

User experience (UX) is crucial for on-page SEO. A good UX keeps users on your site longer, thereby reducing bounce rates. Of course, if your experience wasn’t good, you wouldn’t have read up to this point, not so? Now, here are some of the small things you need to do to improve the UX of your website visitors:

  • Readability: Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and subheadings to make your content easy to read. In addition, use short sentences. Try to make your sentences shorter than 20 words each. Also, use a lot of active voice and avoid passive voice. For example, instead of writing “he has been knocked down by the car”, rephrase it to “the car knocked him down”. Doesn’t that sound cool? Of course, yes!
  • Navigation: Ensure your site is easy to navigate. Use a clear menu and internal links.
  • Visual Appeal: Use high-quality images and a clean design. Of course, remember to strike a balance between image quality and size. In a future article, I will write a detailed article about image optimization. There is a lot to discuss about images, and doing so here might draw this article out of proportion.
